David Iredale

The Sculpture Gallery member David Iredale.

David in Pietrasanta, Italy, alongside the piece of Carrara marble that became The Lovers.

David is an artist based in Leeds in West Yorkshire. Working in different mediums, he specialises in figurative sculpture. Using both stone and wood, these are mostly a celebration of the human form. In addition, David has a portfolio of paintings (in oils) and drawings in pencil, ink and charcoal.

David has recently been carving marble in Pietrasanta, Italy, home to the Artisans who work the world-famous Carrara Marble. He has exhibited his work in Yorkshire, displaying a wide variety of his drawings, paintings and sculpture.

Much of these drawings and sketches are life drawing, and David also runs a life drawing group called Bare Canvas with his wife in the University area of Leeds.

He caught the bug for sculpture after attending a sculpture course at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. His favourite stone to work in is marble but enjoys the challenge of new materials, like the Indian stones in the Emanation Series. Working from his small studio, his usual method for sculpting is to make a preparatory maquette from clay, using sources that include photographs and life drawings.

David is happy to discuss commissions.

David and Steve are now running Carving Courses in The Corn Exchange
